The Marsh Series
Suggestive marshlands of the mind
Living much of my life on the Rhode Island coast, I am inspired by the endlessly changing light and color in this watery landscape. Where land meets water is easily abstracted into shape, texture and color which is where my art lives.
A note about my process: All of these paintings are done in acrylic, which I am now exploring. Unlike watercolor, acrylics allow you to layer paints over one another and they stay separated without blending. In these paintings, I want to maintain the translucency of watercolor, yet layer the colors over each other like stained glass. Most of these are done on raw canvas, which absorbs the paint, similar to paper. Most acrylic painters work on gessoed canvas, which seals the surface so the paints sits on top. You can see the difference here: Marsh in Winter and Frozen Marsh are both painted on gessoed canvas.
